More than 30 participants of the Turkish Cement industry on the 1st Alternative Fuel Workshop in Ankara have shown that Alternative Fuels are a hot topic.

More than 30 Cement Plants have the permission to use Alternative Fuels, but due to purchasing and legal issues, it is not possible to increase the current overall substitution to more than 10%.
This was surely one reason, why responsible Alternative Fuel Managers of all Turkish cement Groups joined the 1st Alternative Fuel workshop organized by MVW Lechtenberg &Partner in Ankara at the Hilton Hotel on the 21st and 22nd of September.
A keynote presentation of Ahmet Vasif Pekin, General Manager of ADOCIM, Tokat and Member of the Board of the Turkish Cement manufacturers Association, which gave a perfect overview about current clinker production trends and forecasts about the need of Alternative Fuel increase in the Turkish Industry. Currently, most of the Plants still suffering from the absence of wastes as raw materials for co processing. Mr. Pekin stated, that “there is enough waste, but most of the waste is still land filled as they are not enough processing facilities and no governmental pressure in avoiding landfill”.
Therefore the identification and sourcing was one of the most interesting presentations done by Dipl. Ing. Thomas Koch, MVW Staff member with a long experience in identification, sampling and qualifying wastes as raw Material for RDF processing.
The identification of useable wastes as raw material for the RDF production or as solely (mono) fraction for the use as RDF is the most important key issue in a successful RDF project. A lively discussion between the Participants about this point was followed up also during the nice evening dinner.
The resulting Influence of using RDF in the Clinker production was explained based on a few examples from MVW Projects all over the world by Dr. Diller. Dr. Diller has a 20 years experience in clinker and cement production and was responsible for Alternative Fuels and Raw Materials Quality management and purchase for the Cemex operations in Germany before he joined MVW Lechtenberg as Head of cement department. Common alternative Fuels types such as Tyres and RDF will have a significant influence not only on the Kiln operation. Sulphur or other constituents such as phosphate will also have an influence on the cement quality.
Regulatory Guidelines, legal Framework for the use of Alternative Fuels in Turkey were described by Dirk Lechtenberg, before a last presentation about RDF processing held by Thomas Koch were made. “The “Right” Equipment is one factor for a successful RDF project” he mentioned, “but not only the investment costs rather than the operating costs for wear parts and spare parts are most crucial”. “The most important factor is the knowledge about the waste and the right operation of such Equipment” he closed his very impressive presentation.
On the second Day, the “Suppliers Day” , Heinz Hax and Klaus Rupp of Schenck process explained their solutions for the storage dosing and feeding of various types of RDF. New Orders also in Turkey for dried sewage sludge feeding at Akcanca Cement Büyükçekmece Plant and for RDF at Aslan Cimento shows Schenck process experience.

The new screw - weigh feeder system was described. With this system a reliable and simple feeding even from coarser RDF materials can be done.
After feeding of RDF to the Kiln, a dedicated burner system needs to be implemented. Therefore Mr. Bodo Guse, Sales Manager of Pillard Feuerungen, Germany gave a detailed overview about their latest developments in specialized Burner systems – not only for RDF. The NOVAFLAMM Burner- a proven technology used worldwide in the Cement industry allows the Cement Plant operators to simplify the adjustment of the burner, to reduce the installation and running costs and to reduce the electrical consumption.

Last but not least- Süleyman Sarim of Powitec technologies gave a brief overview about the optimized process control by the PIT Navigator System. Powitec received the “German Innovation Award Climate and Environment for Outstanding and Sustainable Technology” for its State of the Art Neuronal self learning technology, which allows cement plants to optimize fuel consumption, operation, and CO2 reduction.

As a summary by the participants: outstanding, professional organised and resounding success.
The exchanges of experience and networking continued during the coffee breaks, lunches and a convivial evening dinner, the latter hosted by the team of organizers at the pleasantly-located hotel Restaurant Hilton in Ankara.
