The use of alternative fuels and raw materials in the cement & lime industry is common practice in most European countries, while in many other countries of the world it is still in its early phase of development.
Our company, Lechtenberg & Partner, specializes in consulting companies from the cement and lime industry all over the world with regard to the implementation of alternative fuels from biomass and suitable waste. Lechtenberg & Partner develops concepts for the processing of domestic waste and other waste into alternative fuels, checks the environmentally relevant and process specific influences on the cement production, plans adequate preparation plants and supervises the ongoing production and the continuous input in cement production plants. Our customers include leading cement & lime manufacturers as well as municipalities and waste collectors from all continents.
During the last three years we have been working on the development of a comprehensive database about alternative fuels and raw materials that compiles 20 years of firsthand experience gained from various projects all over the world. It provides information on more than 80 different substances that can be used directly, or after processing, as alternative fuels or as suitable raw material for the cement and lime industry.
Until today, there is no existing compendium about alternative fuels and alternative raw materials to be used by the responsible AFR managers and decision makers in their day-to-day business. Therefore, we have now decided to publish our established knowledge in a two-volume Alternative Fuels and Raw Materials Handbook (AFR Handbook), which will be the first book of such kind on the market.
The first volume presents the basic conditions for the use of alternative raw materials and fuels, such as:
• Legal framework
• Guidelines of the cement & lime industry
• Calculation basis for alternative fuels
• Types of alternative fuels (biomass, waste-based fuels, solids/liquids)
• Influences on the clinker production process
• Treatment technologies: crushing, screening, classifying, removal of pollutants
• Reception, dosing, storage, sampling techniques
• Flame control, burner technologies, fire protection
• Impact on CO2 emissions
• Purchase management
• Logistics
• Quality control/quality management
• Trials organization
• Analysis procedures
Due to complexity of the facts sheets compilation it is envisaged that the 1st volume will conclude with the first part of AFR fact sheets.
The 2nd volume continues the compilation of AFR fact sheets. These fact sheets, each one consisting of 20 – 40 pages, present precisely the important characteristics of altogether more than 80 different substances which are suitable as alternative fuels and alternative raw materials. This implies:
• Information about origin, composition and availability
• Chemical and physical parameters, such as bulk density, flow behavior and burning behavior
• Specific influences on the clinker production process
• Economic and technical conditions for treatment, storage and dosage possibilities
• Specific legal requirements
• Safety at work
• Environmental aspects
• Country-specific information
With two volumes totaling approx. 1,200 pages, this will be the most comprehensive compendium of alternative fuels and raw materials for the cement and lime industry. This compendium will provide responsible AFR managers and other decision makers from the industry with detailed information regarding alternative fuels and raw materials.
Global Cement Magazine already published short summaries and excerpts of some fact sheets in the monthly magazine. Please find attached recent excerpts from the March and April issues.
The AFR Handbook will be published in continuous 4-color digital printing, each volume in a bound hardback. In addition, the possibility to gain access to our new website will be offered so that continuous updates can be easily provided. The initial publication of the first volume will appear in the 3rd quarter of 2011. Each volume will be published separately. The price for volume 1 stands at € 690, volume 2 will be available at € 650 per book plus VAT at the prevailing rate.
