People who start out with a burning ambition suddenly lose their motivation completely. High achievers with a strong dedication towards their work and their company become unable to perform. Previous energetic and proactive individuals find themselves being constantly tired and becoming increasingly ill with high absenteeism as a consequence.
Burnout is spreading rapidly all over the world today and the costs of health care and loss of production amounts to hundreds of billions each year – and sometimes even the loss of human lives.
At the best the burnout means a long recovery period before going back to work again but often it can mean the end of a career!
It’s important to understand that burnout is a syndrome which means that several different symptoms appear at the same time. So when we talk about burnout, it’s not a question of one single indicator but a number of various factors which accumulate over time. That’s why there is no one remedy for preventing burnout. To prevent it from happening, to build up your resilience, you need several different things which, all put together, will sum up.
At work there are several things which can contribute to a burnout. It can be the feeling of not having any or very little influence on your work and the work situation in general. It can be perceived as lack of freedom of action; it can be a lack of recognition and appreciation – or even a lack of any feedback at all. It can also be vague role descriptions and unclear or unrealistic performance expectations.
But the personal traits are just as – if not even more – important. We need to look at what we can, realistically, influence and change – and what not. We might not be in a position to change the world economy but we can change the way we look at things and how we deal with them. Crucial is not what happens to us but how we respond to it.
What we focus on is what we see – and almost only that – so it’ of course very important to chose exactly what we put our focus on.

Christin Joensson is a member of the International Coach Federation and has 20 years+ experience working in high achieving surroundings for international companies in Europe. Some years ago she experienced a severe burnout herself and it took her over five months to recover. It was during this intense period she learned the strategies of success and high achievement — matched with superb well-being.
Having gone through burnout and experienced it herself there is a significant difference in the level of understanding and dealing with this topic than if the knowledge is solely based on theory. She has tested and used these strategies and solutions herself and she knows they work – and they work well!
