Postgraduate Study Course "MSc in Pharmaceutical Medicine"

The international orientated study course “Master of Science (MSc) in Pharmaceutical Medicine” at the University of Duisburg-Essen is the first accredited and state-approved Postgraduate Study Course in Pharmaceutical Medicine in Germany. The English study course lasts two years and is designed that it can be conducted while the participant is working. This opens especially employees of pharmaceutical companies and health care institutions job-related options.

While observing national and international quality standards, Pharmaceutical Medicine deals with the discovery, research and development of medicinal products and medical devices. In addition, it is engaged in benefit/risk-assessment, approval, marketing and monitoring of drugs and biotechnological products.

Participants will interact with lecturers from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the USA. They are key thought and opinion leaders. They work in health care institutions and the international pharmaceutical industry. 


The next study course will start in April 2011.

Educational Objectives

The objective of this study course is to focus on day-to-day practice, to promote interdisciplinary knowledge and to enable the participants to deal with the complex international tasks facing health care institutions and the pharmaceutical industry.

The general objectives of this course are:

• to give the participant an integrated overview of all relevant topics within  the health institutions and the pharmaceutical industry.

• to educate physicians and scientists in all major aspects of drug research  and development, with emphasis on clinical development.

• to stimulate an insight into the pitfalls and possibilities of research and development with a new chemical entity.

• to present the health economic environment and its implications for drug  development.

• to create an educational platform that enables the participant to fulfil and understand a variety of roles within the health institutions and the pharmaceutical industry.

• to make the participant aware of various aspects of social competence as well as of the scientific, ethical and social role of the clinical scientist in professional  teams within the health institutions and the pharmaceutical industry. 

• to train the participant in moderation and leadership of groups.

• to increase the communicative skills of the candidate. 

Course Structure

The study course covers two years and is divided into 3 modules:

• Fundamental principles and tools
• Pharmaceutical new product development
• Patient and markets

with 18 study units taught in block seminars on Thursday afternoon, Friday and Saturday at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Each study unit concludes with an examination.

After 18 study units, a time period for thesis preparation and oral examination follows. The study course can be conducted while the participant is working.
