Underlying Aspects in Intercultural Communication

Communication is determined by cultural factors relating to patterns of attitudes, norms, behaviour, and values taken for granted. The main underlying aspects in intercultural communication are due to the use of para-verbal aspects of language - body language, facial expression, gesture, and tone of voice.

Even small variations in non-verbal behaviour may lead to misunderstanding in communication. Communication styles vary from culture to culture. Direct or indirect communication, linear or contextual thinking indicate cultural differences that refer to core values like honor (group loyality), concept of self (individualism versus collectivism) or perception of the environment (material versus spirit).

Future research might focus on the socio-psychological aspects of intercultural communication like group behaviour and life events that affect immigrants and sojourners.
