The conference series “Media Production” deals with issues of production, integration, distribution, and archiving of media content. This year’s program focuses upon production environments and processes for 3D applications. In recent years, technological advancements significantly altered the conditions for the production of media applications and content. When tracing back this development to the 1990s, the widescale application of digitised workflows in the printing industry lead to revolutionary gains in productivity. For the last decade we can observe a similar impact caused by the automation of processes and production steps in the TV and the multimedia world. In particular rich internet technologies, content management systems and web services allowed for an enourmous increase in productivity related to internet applications. Right now we experience the emergence of a new wave of enhanced multimedia capability, this time in relation to communication and e-commerce systems. Currently, 3D technologies are becoming increasingly visible in dynamically generated information systems for web applications or mobile applications. At the same time flexible, real-time 3D applications also become more prevalent in many production environments. Highly complex 3D models are now being used throughout the entire development cycle of industrial products. In the automotive industry, for example, CAD models are not only being used for design and visualization, but also for functional simulations in Digital Prototyping. In architecture, 3D models have been established as core applications in areas like design, structural engineering calculations, and virtual site inspection. In medicine, 3D models become increasingly popular in diagnostics, treatment, and time-based scenario simulations. Finally, the entertainment industry uses 3D models in a cohesive production process for both film and interactive gaming products on various media platforms. This development benefits from the availability of new, flexible, and easily accessible 3D technologies that support the entire lifecycle of 3D models and applications, as well as from recent standardization efforts aimed at improving the interoperability of 3D production tools. This year’s conference pursues the questions on how to integrate these new 3D technologies into existing media production scenarios and how to master the challenges on the way from static to dynamic, real-time 3D applications on the web, and where to find optimization potentials in production processes. The event is aimed at media producers and media providers, technology developers and designers, but also at scientists and students of media-oriented disciplines.
