Developing Country in Alternative Fuels

Australia, a country of superlatives: Only 22 Mio Habitants living on 7,6 Mio km² - the 6th biggest country in the world- means each Habitant has 2,8 km² living space. With a GDP of app. 36.000 $/year per Habitant, Australia is one of the most developed countries in the world. As Australia is a very big Country, there is enough space for (cheap) Landfill sites which doesn’t force the recycling and waste reduction. Due to the public awareness about Climate Change which effects Australia`s Environment with water shortage, typhoons and yearly Resource recovery and forest fires, more and more effort is done by the Australian Government and by the Australian Industry to reduce the environmental impact. Resource Recovery is now developed by all industrial stakeholders especially the cement Industry.
The Australian cement industry is made up of three major producers: Adelaide Brighton Ltd, Cement Australia and Blue Circle Southern Cement. These companies have operations around Australia, including 15 manufacturing sites, 10 mines and 74 distribution terminals. Very importantly, these cement plants are generally located in regional centres and in small rural communities, making them significant regional employers. The industry employs about 1,850 people, produces more than nine million tonnes of product a year and has an annual turnover in excess of $1.79 billion.
Fossil Fuels are still very cheap in Australia- therefore only the environmental aspect on reducing Carbon emissions and increased landfill taxes due to public awareness are the driving factor for Australian Cement Industry to use Alternative Fuels.
In a one- Day comprehensive Workshop, MVW Lechtenberg with its local ofice in Melbourne will present the status of using alternative Fuels in the Australian Cement & Lime Industry. A packed program:

  •   ‘Waste Assessment’ featured the following elements:
  • Waste evaluation - Sampling - Sample preparation -
  • Analysis of biogenic content - Waste contracting.
  • ‘Kiln impact’ comprised: Major impacts on kiln and
  • clinker - Impact on clinker quality - Impact on fan capacities
  • - Infl uences from alternative fuels moisture.
  • ‘RDF Technology’ encompassed: Separation -
  • screening - Manual sorting - Air classifying - Optical
  • sorting - Shredding - Example RDF plant - Storage
  • - Transportation - Dosing - Feeding.
  • ‘Economics’ consisted of: - Calculating AF project
  • - CAPEX/OPEX - Economical feasibility - CDM/JI
  • carbon credits - Financing AF project.
  • ‘Permitting Issues’ featured: - Environmental
  • impact assessment - emission monitoring - Public information
  • - Quality management for AF - Laboratory.

The Workshop will atke place in Sydney, Australia on the 19th of October 2010
